Full Review of the Garmin Edge 200 GPS Cycle Computer

Garmin is the market leader in GPS cycling computers, and the all new Garmin Edge 200 cycle computer makes it so easy to see why. This model is similar to the Edge 500, but provides data sets in a much simpler format, appealing to casual and amateur riders rather than professionals. The Edge 200 means that riding data can be logged immediately, and other useful information can be found at the touch of a button. Garmin computers have completely revolutionised how cyclists monitor their performances and training times.

Usability

Although the Garmin Edge 200 cycle computer is far more advanced than the machines and equipment that was available ten years ago, it does not overcomplicate matters in the slightest. The computer is incredibly easy to use whilst riding, and when analysing the data recorded on an external device, such as a home desktop computer. Many computer screens are difficult to see outside in the sunlight but the Edge 200 features an excellent backlit dot matrix display which is easy to read no matter what the weather.

The Garmin Edge 200 cycle computer is very easy to use as the speed and distance are detected with GPS rather than older magnets and sensors, avoiding the need to enter a wheel size. Setting up the computer is very easy, riders simply click it into place on the mount which is placed on the handlebars.

Features

The Garmin Edge 200 cycle computer is GPS-enabled, meaning that it can track a rider’s time, distance, speed, and calories burned. This particular model gathers the same information as the Edge 500, but displays the data on a much simpler interface, meaning that amateur riders can find out the same information as professionals, but in a way that is much easier to understand.

Riders can gather data on their speed, distance, time, average speed, ascent, and calories burned. Unfortunately, one this cycle computer is missing the lack of heart rate or mapping capability, but it does have a visual guide for uploaded courses.

Garmin states that the Edge 200 has a 14 hour battery life, but it seems that the computer would last a lot longer than that. When it does eventually die out, it can be charged via USB on a computer or in the mains.

Disadvantages

One the main problems with the Edge 200 could also be viewed as an advantage by some –the Edge 200 provides very basic information which is useful in some respects but this will not satisfy professional riders who may prefer the advanced Edge 500 instead.

Advantages of the Garmin Edge 200

The best thing about the Garmin Edge 200 cycle computer is that it allows casual riders to join in the fun and start recording their data, without being too complex. It also has a number of handy features including the Auto Pause which stops the timer automatically when you are not moving. The best price we could find it for is £110.49 from Hargroves Cycles. I would recommend the Garmin Edge 200 to anyone. I recently purchase one for my husband. It doesn’t offer the features of the Garmin Edge 500 but is still a great cycling computer. You do not have many options for tweaking the information an how it is displayed. Regretfully it doesn’t monitor your heart rate. Since my husband is not interested in monitoring his heart rate the cycling computer is perfect for him. My husband loves this cycling computer.
